Number of Fellows: 1 fellow per year
The Duke University Shoulder & Elbow Fellowship is located in Durham, NC. This shoulder and elbow faculty believe there is a fantastic opportunity for a shoulder & elbow fellow given the complexity of the cases performed at Duke, our growing department, and excitement about training surgeons specifically interested in complex shoulder & elbow cases. Our goal for this fellowship is to equip future shoulder & elbow surgeons with the tools to manage a busy shoulder & elbow practice (academic or private practice) that includes primary and revision arthroscopic cases, primary and revision arthroplasty cases, tendon transfers, scapulothoracic based cases, fracture care, and a complete elbow experience. Patients from a large referral network (e.g. Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina) come to Duke with complex conditions and we look forward to providing a comprehensive experience to our fellows. We do anticipate a mentorship model schedule with approximately 4 months working with each attending throughout the year (broken into 2 separate 2 month blocks). We will additionally plan to provide the ability for the fellow to have some flexibility in their day-to-day schedule in order to seek out/scrub interesting/unique cases. The fellow will have a strong elbow experience (both in trauma and elective cases) as all attendings treat shoulder and elbow pathology.
Additionally we do plan for the fellow to have a VA appointment where they will plan to work as an attending. We do see this as an opportunity for the fellow to book and perform cases on their own – with the assistance of an attending if needed.
We anticipate the following case breakdown for our fellowship: Primary arthroplasty: 250, Revision arthroplasty: 75, Rotator cuff repair: 200, Shoulder instability: 50, Elbow arthroplasty: 5-10, Elbow arthroscopy: 20, Other shoulder/elbow: 65.
